Many Native American peoples used feather headdresses, especially of eagles, as decorative elements or as a distinctive sign of social rank.
The first North American Indians to have used complex adornments were the Crows. The Blackfoot adopted them at the beginning of the 19th century, but their eagle feathers are erected circularly and vertically all around the head. Chief Pawnee Petalesharo wore one in 1821, the Cheyennes around 1830, and the Sioux in the mid-19th Century.
